Community Service and Philanthropy

We are fortunate to live in a time and place of relative privilege; we wish to actively and strategically share our talents and resources.  Some organizations for which we have volunteered:

The partners of Design Forty Five donate at least 25% of our gross income to non-profit organizations.

More and more, our clients are finding value in sustainable design. The reasons to build green are many and well-known, ranging from healthier indoor air to better daylighting and lower energy bills. We are excited when clients choose to explore methods and materials that consider the long-term effects of a building on its occupants and its surroundings, and we can offer unique expertise in this area.

  • We maintain a library of techniques and products to specify sustainable projects.
  • At previous firms, we have brought sustainability to large institutional projects.
  • We can help clients achieve Minnesota GreenStar certification for remodels, additions, or new construction.
  • We have experience with the complications of green residential remodeling, including at our office, which is powered entirely by on-site solar and off-site wind energy (through Xcel Energy's Windsource Program) and has ground-source geothermal heating.

Often, sustainable design is simply good design — many elements of traditional architecture are the norm because they are efficient and durable in their climates. Our designs are informed by local vernacular, and executed with the most suitable contemporary materials and methods.
